Ballistic movements are movements that cannot be controlled once initiated. These include saccade and tics.

Etymology

It comes from the Latin 'ballista' a Roman weapon for throwing heavy objects.

Neurobiology

They are thought to be due to factors arising from activity in the cerebellum.
