The problems with a case study are as follows:

  • Each case study is unique and thus cannot be generalised to the rest of the populations
  • Case studies are close to impossible to replicate
  • Case studies often require their subjects to recall past events leading to potential inaccuracies
  • Case studies may be affected by researcher bias (the prior beliefs or expectations of the researcher)
  • Case studies may involve vulnerable people (such as those with Autism) and there should be plenty of ethical considerations for the subject of the case study (i.e. confidentiality)
